How To Pick A Topic For Your Blog.

Last week I asked what people’s biggest struggles are when starting a blog, and many people said picking the topic for their blog.

I could totally relate. I didn’t know what to blog about or what people would want to read from me for a long time, so I just wouldn’t write blog posts.

Picking my blog topic was a real challenge because I didn’t think I had anything to write about. I started my blog when I was newly married and living in an old ugly studio apartment. I didn’t feel like I had any experience or content that someone would want to read.

So for a while after starting my blog, I didn’t really write any blog posts.

Then eventually, I decided just to try and write something I thought someone would want to read. A blog post about how to prepare for going to college out of state, and to my surprise, no one read it. So then, I found the best strategy for how to pick your blog topic

Write about everything.

If you’ve ever read a blog post on how to start a blog, almost everyone will say, “first pick your niche,” then “pick your blog domain name,” and I couldn’t disagree more knowing what I know now. I really think you should pick a simple domain name that goes with everything. But, of course, you can always change it in the future. Then I think you should write about everything.

Once I wrote a blog post, and no one read it, I just kept writing blog posts on all different topics and sharing them all on Pinterest and in Facebook groups, and I would look at my analytics to see what content was doing the best. Then, I would write more on those topics, and if I didn’t do well, I would go back to writing about all different things.

From this, I was actually able to start making money from my blog.

If I had just picked the topic I thought would have made me successful from the beginning, chances are, it would have taken me a lot longer actually to be successful.

So I recommend just writing about all the ideas that come to mind.

What if you still don’t know what to write about?

You might be like, “great, I’ll talk about multiple things, but I still don’t know what to start talking about.” Then I’m here to help.

I put together a free quiz that can help you pick your starting topic.

Here is a link to the quiz.

From there, you can get started writing on that topic.

Once I get started writing, I’ve found that I can normally brainstorm a few more posts, so I recommend keeping a notebook or a document open on your computer where you can list ideas when you have them.

You don’t need it all figured out to start.

This was kind of a weird blog post because instead of telling you how to pick the perfect topic, I’m saying you don’t need a topic to be successful.

Picking your topic beforehand might limit your success because you could pick a topic that would gain you less popularity than another topic you could write about.

I would have never found blogging success if I had gone with the topic I thought I wanted to write about.

Now that I feel free to talk about everything, I’ve found more success than I knew possible.

If you struggle to pick a starting topic, I highly recommend taking my free quiz to help you pick a starting topic. Click here to take the quiz.
